As we bring a stack of mostly-empty glasses and mugs from the office to the kitchen, we’ve all wondered: What would happen if I dumped these in my pothos plant? Probably nothing, at least for the time being. While some traditional beverages should never be used to “water” plants, others are sa...

RöstHaus Coffee uses the Specialty Coffee Association flavor wheel to determine the flavor profiles of the different coffee origins we roast. Many people like flavored coffee but don't really understand the difference between an origins flavor profile and flavored coffee. We want you to find the coffee drink you like. It is so easy to do yourself, you can do it at home and share your recipes with your friends.

Flavored coffee is made by adding oils, natural or synthetic, to coffee beans. The coffee beans are coated with compounds either during the roast or coated after roasting. The coffee beans used in these flavored coffees are usually not specialty grade.

Spices, Homemade Syrups, Extracts, Homemade Creamers
Spices in your spice cabinet? Adding some ground spices into your coffee grounds as you’re brewing is a simple way to add flavor. Add about ⅛ teaspoon of a spice or spice mix to ground coffee and brew. This is a simple and natural way to add an extra flavor to your coffee. This is an ancient practice from many parts of the world. In Ethiopia, ginger is a common flavor to add. In Mexico, many cups are flavored with cinnamon. In the Middle East, it’s common to brew with cardamom. We recommended spices like cinnamon, apple pie spice, pumpkin pie spice, nutmeg, clove, cardamom, black pepper, or ginger. The result should be a subtle flavor change. For flavored coffee check out your spice cabinet. What extracts do you have on hand? Remember a little spice can go a long way.

Homemade syrups are a great way to add flavor to a coffee drink.
Next time you peel oranges, add the peel to a pot along with one part sugar, two parts water and simmer on low until it thickens into a syrup for about 20 minutes, This orange syrup can be used in coffee, tea, added to desserts or over ice cream, in cocktails, as a marinades or brush on cakes to add flavor and moisture.
Caramel coffee syrup is easy too. In a small pot combine 1 cup of sugar into 1/4 cup of water over low heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Now turn the heat up to medium high, cover the pot, and boil 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the cover and stir vigorously until the syrup is a light amber color then remove from heat. Next slowly add another 1/2 cup of water into caramel syrup be to gently stir the caramel because it can splatter. Now add 1/4 teaspoon vanilla and a small pinch of salt. Also, you can add 1 teaspoon of honey to prevent crystallization Let it cool completely before use. Add 1 or 2 tablespoons to 8 ounces of coffee. The syrup should keep in the fridge for a few months.

Extracts can be added by the drop to grounds before you brew and give a subtle flavor. Or right into your cup after you brew for a wallop of flavor. A little drop goes a long way. Choose pure extracts whenever possible because they have a more natural flavor profile. Examples are vanilla, nut extracts, peppermint, coconut, raspberry, cinnamon, maple, orange, and chocolate. You could try mixing flavors too, for familiar themes, like pairing chocolate and hazelnut, or orange and vanilla, or butter and rum extracts in your coffee. Only add an extract drop by drop, and taste between drops so you can find a flavor concentration that works well.

Do it yourself Homemade Coffee Creamer? Iit’s very simple. Use equal parts of sweetened, condensed milk and whole milk mixed with a drop or two extract or mix in a store bought or homemade syrup you like.

Create your own favorite flavor or find a recipe. Let us know if we can help.
