When Josh Venable played Nirvana’s on many moons ago, I was at that certain age where I truly felt the shift in the cosmos. It was life altering. I had recently been introduced by my friend Brady Hall to the Pixies so my mind was pre-cracked and pre-disposed for the monumental shake up that Nevermind delivered. And boy howdy what a record. Not everything holds up like it useta, TV Dinners - yuck. But this album - oh yeah. It’s still huge and relevant. To Me at least. I wasn’t one of the lucky ones to say they were at their Trees show. I saw them later at the Fair Park Coliseum with the Breeders and Shonen Knife, and didn’t know how incredibly lucky I was as his time was running short. Anyways - this all has lead to this : I’m gonna eat this Turkey club and listened to Nirvana driving around town today. Tonight, I’ll be back at the cafe slinging a guitar and yapping. Come hang with me 7-9. Happy hour starts at 4 if you wanna pregame.

As a kid, I couldn’t understand my Dad’s apathy as a Cowboy’s fan; how hopelessly he saw each season. But by the ‘92 season, he’d waited some 15 years since they’d won their last Super Bowl. I have now have waited twice as long as him. On this day that pro footballs is returning, let us remember to savor the great times as they arrive, to hoist a glass while the joy is present, and to never forget the wins when they come as that may be the only thing we get to celebrate each year. Oh, and the Cowboys play both the ‘Niner’s and Packers this season, so we’ll get to see “the catch” AND the “catch-no-catch” a lot. Huzzah Cowboys. Maybe this is the year it all comes together. I’m gonna eat my apprehension away with a Breakfast Number 2.

While enjoying iced teas at a restaurant that has asked me to stop mentioning their excellent iced teas, JRay Walker and I were talking about how girls/women are generally quick to point out how all guys/men are fascinated with Ancient Rome and say it’s strange. Then we realized all girls/women are obsessed with the Royal Family. One thing we can all be equally obsessed with together? Pancakes.

You ever get up one morning to write a post about your restaurant, start searching around the internet, go down the Wi******er Mystery House rabbit hole, start to wonder why and how that project could’ve ever happened, get to the part where you’ve almost got the answer, and then p**f, you lost it, and now you’ve got nothing to scribble about in your post that supposed to be about food, but since you’ve already “dedicated” so much time to “researching” a wild piece of architecture out in San Jose, CA., you think, “Well, surely I should write about that?” but you don’t really, you just kinda ramble on about the idea of the thing that you might’ve written about??? Well, if that’s you, lemme just say, I see you. TONIGHT! at the cafe. JR and his crew from Unplugged Commons will be in the house with board games of all types from 5-8 during our infamous which goes from

Back at Dan’s Diner in Lakewood, I had this thing I’d pull whenever I was feeling just right : order a round of bacon for the house. It’s a sweet move, and the confused but happy looks on everyone’s faces around the room are worth the dime. The last time I tried it (at an undisclosed other cafe), the waiter said ‘no’ because she didn’t want to offend any vegetarians. I replied, “well just give it to the ones who want it.” She was like, “Naw.” To this day I’m still baffled. Lemme just say: here, you can order as many of whatever you want for whomever you like. Maybe you’re like me and ordered a plate of these ‘scuits and gravy for the table. Or maybe just maybe you’re ordering for the whole room. Or mayyybe you’re ringing the bell for everyone at our 4-8? It’s up to you how cool you are to your friends and neighbors.

Each morning, I look outside at the leaves on the ground seeming to announce that fall has arrived, but as soon as any part of me breaches the door, an enveloping heat washes over, and the fallen leaves crunch under my steps instead of laying still and quiet. However, it’s September now, and everything is actually changing. Our tickets to the great State Fair of Texas arrived signaling the beginning of the end of , and in 24 days, we will receive opening day pins that are yet another reminder of just how lucky we are to live in Dallas, Texas, and the heat of today will become a melted memory on a stick.

It’s insane how many times the words “Chicken Fried Chicken” fly outta my mouth a week. I might be talking about music or movies or anything, and it somehow finds its way into the conversation. ‘Cause the thing is, if you HAVEN’T had it, well then that really is just cray. Lemme put it this way : eat it.

My Dad had an incredible knack for renting the most oddball movies. We’d head over to Premiere Video or Video Update, and he’d nab the craziest films he could find. Everything made by Troma was beloved. The Cannon Films’ catalog was, of course, a staple of the 80’s, and by the time they’d acquired the rights to the Death Wish franchise, my Dad was at his peak of movie renting prowess. And what joy Death Wish 3 brought him when Charles Bronson introduced his new weapon “Willie.” Always shot at a angle to accent its insane length, this boomstick was a cannon unto itself, and my Dad never stopped laughing about it. So, today, I raise my mimosa glass and say, “Here, here” to Charley Bronson, a true Hollywood legend.

Grilled cheese sandwiches - they’re still excellent. We made a lot of wild decisions of what to eat as kids - for some reason Runtz is the only thing coming to mind - but a grilled cheese still slaps as the kids used to say a few years ago. I’m a lil’ foggy from last night so I gotta eat this quicker than later. Speaking of later, Zachary Moulton of Silverada/ Mike and the Moonpies will be at the Café TONIGHT 7 or so until 9 or so. Happy Hour gets to getting at 4. Grilled cheese Sandwiches- I get to eat this thang and then dream of when I can do it again.

While this plate of migas doesn’t have Jimmy Dean’s sausage on it, for some reason I’m recalling the complaint message left by a disgruntled customer of Jimmy Deans after they changed their recipe. I’ll put the link in the comments. If you haven’t seen/listened to it so you can have yourselves a treat. (Warning, it is explicit.) Speaking of treats, our starts at 4 and goes until 8 and on National Red Wine Day, bottles are half off like they are for every happy hour. is on around 7 or so. Check out the link.

I know it’s National Burger Day, and ours is pretty, pretty, pretty good, but y’all are getting tired of me posting burger photos all the time so I’m gonna … No we’re not. We love burger photos! … wait what’s that? Hmm. I thought I heard something. Anyways, like I was say saying, y’all are tired of me posting about burgers so … That’s not true! We love burger photos! … Hmm. Now I know I heard something that time. Let’s try something new : the interrupting Chicken Fangers say what? … … oh now you’re quiet.

Knowing the weekend drops down from this hump and rolls into this weekend makes me jumpier than a jackrabbit on jumping beans. Speaking of beans, we gotta true blue legend coming SATURDAY night to the cafe - the himself Zachary Moulton. You’ve heard his slick pedal steel stylings in Silverada/Mike and the Moonpies, and now you can hear him take the helm at center stage. It’s gonna be a hoot ‘n’a holler. FRIDAY - we’ve got a debut here at the cafe. You might have caught his YouTube or Instagram channels, comes to deep ellum. All shows run 7 or so until 9 or so, our unbeatable goes 4-8, and the party starts wherever you are whenever you want it to.

Sure I could order a Chicken Fried Steak or Chicken, Huevos Rancheros, Migas, a Burger, the Stuffed Salmon, some pancakes, or any of the other things on the menu. But not today. It’s “Healthy Kick in the Pants Monday.” Today’s choice : a delicious Cobb Salad. The bacon’s there for, uhm, protein.

I order the club all the time, man, and I’m not even a member. I don’t know how I get away with it. I like my sandwich with turkey, bacon, tomatoes, lettuce, and bread. Well let’s form a club then, but we need more stipulations. How does everyone feel about frilly toothpicks? Love ‘em? Well, this club is formed! Spread the news nationwide. Speaking of spreading news like a club, TONIGHT! Greg Schroeder, Jacob Furr, and Gabe Wootton are swapping some songs from 7-9pm. starts at 4pm and goes until 8. This club is not invite only.
