It was some 61 years ago that Bob Dylan “went electric” at the Newport Folk Festival and turned a buncha squares into a mob. I supposed it’s hard to imagine how punk rock “Like a Rolling Stone” must have sounded to the crowd’s fragile ears at the moment. The event nonetheless helped human-canon Dylan into stardom as a musician doing what he wants on his own terms. As Dylan said in one of his memoirs, he should have been more aware of what was to come after the ominous intro he received that night from Ronnie Gilbert of The Weavers. *I’ve slightly edited it to fit into the context of this lil’ story. “And here [it] is…take [it], you know [that chip], [it’s] yours.”

Time is a construct, am I right? 9am sounds early, but to some folks having worked an all night shift, it’s happy hour. So, happy hour kinda starts whenever you wanna be happy for at least an hour. And while our officially happy hour at the Cafe technically starts today at 4pm and runs until 8pm, let’s circle back to the top : happy hour starts whenever you wanna start being happy, because time is a construct and we create our own reality. And today, someone created “National Tequila Day.”

You know in the winter when it’s cold outside so you want to stay in your bed because it’s nice and warm? It’s the extreme opposite out there today. If this whole life thing’s a simulation, then they did a great job - my “skin” feels like it’s in an air fryer. Guess the only way through it is through it. I’m eating a bowl of red and chugging iced tea. See you at the corner of Main and Walton.

This was my daycare as a kid. I’d get dropped off with $5 bucks at 10am and picked up at closing time without an ounce of sunscreen. I spent many afternoons in “time out,” ate sparsely, and drank mostly pool water as it shot in my mouth at the end of the Der Stuka. Great memories. According to the picture, even the highways were made of grass. Groovy man. The times were certainly wild indeed.

I admit, this isn’t for breakfast, but I woke up craving a . Or, if we ever rename the dish on the menu - ‘Troy’s Frito Pie.’ You might say, “But it’s too hot for chili!” No it’s not. OR maybe you’d say, “But it’s too spicy for the summer?” I don’t know what words you’re trying to say, but Naw. “Bu-bu-but it’s summer!?” Yep, and Frito pies rule all year round. And while we’re on it - First of all, this conversation isn’t real. Second, break me off a Frito pie. And third but certainly not least - here’s to the great Troy Pittmon!

“All’s well that ends well” is good and all, but what about “starting on the right foot,” and “the devil’s in the details?” I guess depending on who you listen to, the whole shebang matters. And don’t mention feet around my food. Speaking of feet, bring ‘em in tonight for blazenhayzen 7pm or so ‘til 9 or so. His voice and music put the “oot” in “boot.” Our gets kickin’ at 4pm and goes ‘til 8. Now, don’t that make you wanna stomp the ground and say “Woooeee!”

I overheard a kid say something pretty wacky to his coworker at the grocery store the other day. Talking about some cartoon TV show, he said, “It takes place in ancient England so there’s dragons and vampires and stuff.” I wonder what’s gonna happen when he watches that documentary series . His mind will be blown. Speaking of blowing minds, this week at the cafe : blazenhayzen will be here Thursday night 7-9pm. And the debut of Josh Gilbert at the cafe Saturday night 7-9pm. As always, we’ve got Happy Hour running from 4-8pm Thursday-Saturdays and free WiFi always for Googling things like : where did all the dragons and vampires go?

What a great weekend at the Cafe. The Deep Vellum Books Music and Literature Festival was a blast. Got to see so many friends and hoist many a glass. My Mom even came in yesterday! Refusing to seek out a free meter, she parked on Walton with her hazards on and somehow escaped without a ticket. I DON’T recommended doing that. What I do recommend is saying Happy Birthday to Geoff Lloyd, an all-around great guy and owner of Club Dada Deep Ellum - A classic Deep Ellum venue with thick roots and a history reaching back nearly 40 years. Enjoy your mushy peas today Geoff!

Had an amazing time at The Kessler last night, and just wanna toss a huge thank you across the board to the whole staff. What a venue. And now there’s a very well deserved statue of the great Jeffrey Liles on the back lawn. This thang also has a water feature! Very cool. Let’s all take a lil’ time to hoist a glass and light one up for the one and only Jeff!
