There’s nothing better than walking into the restaurant and seeing someone settled at the bar with a book—especially when it’s one of my kids.
In our house we believe Readers are Leaders. When we opened Native Son, we pictured it as more than a place to eat and drink. We wanted a communal spot where people could come share laughs, ideas, and stories… or just sit quietly and read or work for a while. A neighborhood living room for Canton and East Texas.
Ransom’s been here this afternoon with his book and a plate of cracklins. Whether you’ve been coming since the day we opened or this would be your first visit, you’re welcome. Pull up a stool. Come for the food, the cocktails, the conversation—or just for a quiet place to read.
(And if you haven’t seen it yet, Texas Highways just published a really nice piece about the place and the idea behind it. Link in bio)

TEAM APPRECIATION POST .
The Native Son family just came through one of the toughest dry spells of the summer. One that has affected our entire community. Not a weather drought. Nay. A people drought. Which will forever be known as THE GREAT ASHLEY RUBIO DROUGHT of 2026.
Ashley is back.
She put off knee surgery for the better part of a year because she did not want to leave the team hanging. We kept telling her the same thing we are telling you now: we would rather have her healthy than heroic. Surgery and recovery took her off the floor for more than a month. She is cleared for light duty, weekends only, and she will ease back behind the bar. If you catch her lifting anything heavy, give her the look. We mean it. Ashley has been ride-or-die since before we opened the doors. November 1, 2024. She was the first application, one of the first interviews, and the very first hire. She came in with real management, brewery, and guest-relationship experience. She is our only certified Cicerone (a certified b**r expert), and the first of the crew to pass BarSmarts (an industry spirits-and-service certification) and get behind the stick on night one. Second photo is that night. She has become just a part of Native Son as we are.
Since then she has been in the room for the big wins and the hard nights. She organizes. She pulls the team together. She volunteers the idea before anyone asks. She designed our first chalkboards. She has been nurse, mama hen, friend, and confidant. Her cocktail game has grown with the bar. She rides for the brand, and she rides for the people in it.
She is also a proud mom of two awesome kids she homeschools, and her husband has become part of this family too.
So come say it in person. “Welcome (back) in, Ashley!”
Make a reservation or just drop in this weekend. Come eat with us, give her a hug, and let her do the light work. We are glad she is home!
