Labor Day was born in 1882 to honor the workers who built America — and coffee has quietly fueled that labor ever since. The "coffee break" itself became an official part of the American workday in the 1950s, born out of factory and office routines that ran on strong coffee and short pauses. But there's another kind of labor behind every cup: the farmers in Ethiopia, Colombia, and Honduras who hand-pick and process the beans long before they ever reach a roaster. This week, Ethiopians around the world celebrate Fasika — Ethiopian Easter — one of the most sacred and joyful holidays in the Ethiopian Orthodox calendar. After 55 days of fasting, families gather to break their fast together, filling homes with the aroma of fresh injera, roasted lamb, and the rich, unmistakable scent of freshly roasted coffee.

At the heart of every Fasika celebration is the Ethiopian coffee ceremony — a ritual as old as coffee itself. Green beans are washed and roasted over an open flame, then ground by hand and brewed slowly in a clay jebena pot. The coffee is poured three times — Abol, Tona, and Baraka — each cup representing a blessing: the first for the body, the second for the mind, and the third for the spirit. It is not just coffee. It is community. It is gratitude. It is home.
