I will not forget in my lifetime where I was 25 years ago standing in disbelief of this day. It changed the course of my life. Today is a day to honor those who gave their lives. Not just at the towers but our veterans, our first responders, and those ordinary heroes that jumped in to help where they could. Those people around the world that gave shelter to those that could not make it home, and those that subsequently lost their life as a result of their interaction.
It’s not just the towers it is how life has changed for all of us. God bless them all.

OK, i know i will get in trouble for this post but ENOUGH!
I had to stop what I was doing today to answer a 1 star review I received on Google. The gentleman stated that he has been in my shop three times in a year and three different times in the day, and that my staff has been rude to him every time, but the food is that good and he comes back for that reason.
In his statement he commented that my sandwich makers should just accept this is their lot in life and just get on with it.
That as an owner , I do not deserve to be a restaurant owner (?) and I should pay my workers more money so they would enjoy their time at work more? Really? Apparently you have no clue of what these guys make!
This bit about being rude? I have seen this on so many restaurant reviews lately. They didn’t greet me at the door, the server did not smile, they brought the check to make us leave. Wow!
Well we at Weinberger’s are not in the habit of giving HUGs. Don’t expect one. We are not emotional support sandwich makers.
We are there to make good food! That’s it ! If you think we are anything more than that, if you think we are being rude, that’s on you. We are just doing are job and hoping you enjoy what we make!

This morning I was heading to the store when I heard the song, ‘The Leader of the Band’, (?), by Dan Fogelberg. It is a song about a father and a son and how the son does not feel he is as good as his father. Where in the song really is about how through his father he developed his own talent.
I was an infant when my father decided he could not make enough money as an apprentice butcher at A&P grocery in Chicago to support his family. He borrowed $800.00 from his father (my grandfather), and opened a Chicken parts store. Everyone loved my father except for a guy down the street that owned a grocery store and decided he’d sell chicken cheaper than my father could buy it. To shorten the story he took a part time job at the Seaway Deli. On the Southside of the city of Chicago and learned the deli business from a master deli man.Slowly he turned his Chicken parts store into kosher style deli.
All that to get to the point. I worked for my father as did my brothers and sisters. As an adult the last thing I wanted to do is own a deli. But life throws you curves and here I am. I cannot tell you how many times I think of my father when I create a sandwich. I can picture him eating it and giving me a thumbs up or a ‘Yuch!’ He was brutally honest.
When I look back over my life there were many times I rebelled and went against his advice. I did pay attention working for him, and I learned so much about delis.
He never lived to see Weinberger’s today, but I am confident I would get two thumbs up. He is the man behind the deli. The leader of the band. I just try to live up to what he started. So every sandwich you enjoy has been made as a tribute to my father and the skill he taught me, and his passion for good food.
Thanks Dad, you have a lot of fans!

It’s Friday!!!! Have Lyday’s Friday Sub!!!
People ask me all the time how they can get a sandwich named after them. Well, here is one way.
I have 95 items on my menu and this gentleman decided he was going to try them all! Not only those up there on our board but the special sandwiches on our white board were in his mix. He paced himself! It took a couple of years but he was diligent in what to eat.
Jim Lyday is now legend at Weinberger’s!
The last set of sandwiches on the wall were there since 2003. If luck has it, Weinberger’s and Jim’s sandwich and picture will be hanging there for another 23 years!
The Lyday’s Friday Sub is perfect in this 100 degree weather. It starts with White American cheese for a creamy texture, Genoa, paired with Turkey, and Ham. Add Yellow Mustard and the on either side Butter chip pickles, Banana peppers. Covered in Lettuce, Slivered White Onion, Tomato, With Creamy Italian dressing and a dash of Italian seasoning. The whole sandwich on a garlic grilled Sesame hoagie.
A refreshing finish, and filling. Come celebrate one on our new Faces!
Join me in congratulating Jim. He is the only one ever to try every sandwich. And hi favorite? You’ll have to ask Jim.

Of course yesterday I posted about construction going on and I was not sure when we would open. Well guess what? We are OPEN!
Only two more parts of the puzzle and we will have completed what I had envisioned for the redesign of the shop. My goal is come Grapefest we will be the ALL NEW, OLD WEINBERGER’S DELI.
Look for a roll out of new sandwiches and the breakfast menu.

Our new look! Hahaha.
Friends I don’t know what to tell you when we will be open except for what I am told by our contractor, soon. It was not supposed to be this long. We found two things that needed repair that were not anticipated. They just had to be addressed.
For those expecting a grand reveal, you’ll be disappointed. I want my shop to have the same feel it had when we opened in 2002. We are just a sandwich shop! Nothing fancy, old school artisan sandwiches. Some sandwiches got a 21st century update. Some stayed just like your great great grandparents had. Some I have taken liberties with and put my own spin to , ‘Weinbergerized’. I hope y’all enjoy my creations as much as I have creating them. Even at that I will not please everyone. And to that I say OK. Tell me what you’d like me to do. I am always open to comments from my customers. I have a world of sandwiches to choose from.
So even with what you will find once we open again we will not be done yet. New signs are next and new menu is last.
So let’s talk about the elephant in the room.
‘Oh, they are not the same!’ Well we are. Nothing changes. The bread, the meats, cheeses, vegetables, all the same. We are busier and are learning how to be more efficient. I did get new equipment. Bigger and better. More sandwich makers. And a lot of us are doing double duty. Cleaning the store has been a challenge. More space a greater amount of mess to deal with. And, yes, we are going to have Ice Tea. Equipment has been backlogged. Then there is the issues with ice. We are going though a lot more beverages than ever and trying to get a machine that will keep up. So bear with us. We do know where we are having issues.
Signs are on the way! So if you need to know where to stand for your order, ask. Otherwise grab a seat and we will yell out your order when it is ready.
Hang in there guys we are so close! Thanks for your patience.

We are working on updating our back of house and other small details around the store this week. We will hopefully have everything done by Friday so we can turn on the lights Saturday. Thank you when we will see you soon.

Today we will be closing at 3pm Sunday July 26 as we start construction on our kitchen area. We will be closed all week. July 27-31. We will be making daily post to remind our customers. We will hopefully be back by Saturday with all work finished.
