After 50 years on Maple Avenue, the Stoneleigh P picked up its Christmas lights, old-timey photographs, and bras (donated by patrons to adorn the chandelier) and moved less than two miles away to Lemmon Avenue in 2024. When writer Joseph Guinto moved back to Dallas from D.C., he looked forward to visiting the bar he had frequented decades ago. So were other regulars for a while, but most have since split, leaving owner Tom Garrison and his daughter, Laura Garrison, struggling to turn a profit at the new location. Guinto relates it to the Ship of Theseus problem. โ€œThat ancient ship was rebuilt so many timesโ€”new planks, new rigging, new hullโ€”that philosophers asked: was it still the same ship?โ€ he writes. Other historic Dallas bars have faced similar quandaries. Like The Loon, which has moved twice from the dank, windowless location that made it a favorite. Or Milo Butterfingers, which has been totally gutted. โ€œWalking the tightrope between modernity and nostalgia isnโ€™t easy, and the Stoneleigh P has had to do it not by its own choice,โ€ Guinto writes. โ€œBut hereโ€™s the thing. Different is not bad.โ€

What people say

Stoneleigh P is a classic and timeless bar & grill located in the heart of Dallas on Maple Avenue. Established in 1973, this no-frills upscale dive bar has been serving great food and drinks for almost five decades. The restaurant's classic feel hasn't changed since its inception, making it a go-to spot for locals and tourists alike.

Stoneleigh P offers a casual atmosphere with a variety of food styles to choose from, including brunch, burgers, Mexican, and Tex-Mex. Whether you're looking to dine with friends or family, the restaurant services groups and provides outdoor seating options. Additionally, they offer takeout services for those who prefer to enjoy their meals at home.

One of the specialties of Stoneleigh P is their coffee, which pairs perfectly with their delicious lunch and dinner options. Their menu also includes an extensive list of drinks that are sure to satisfy any craving.

What sets Stoneleigh P apart from other restaurants is its rich history. Originally called the Packard Pharmacy in the early 20s, it was renamed to match the Stoneleigh Hotel when it was built. After being bought by Tom Garrison in 1973 and revamped into a restaurant, it unfortunately burnt down in 1980 but rose from the ashes like a Phoenix.

Despite enduring various events such as Nixon's presidency, hippies, Vietnam War, preppies, yuppies, Reagan's presidency, disco era, Dallas politics and insane neighbors over the years - Stoneleigh P has remained steadfast in providing excellent service and quality food.

Overall, Stoneleigh P is a must-visit spot for anyone looking for great food and drinks in an authentic setting that has stood the test of time.
