“My name is Jack Ingram and I play country music.”

If you ever found yourself shoulder to shoulder inside Adair’s Saloon in the mid 90s, you didn’t just hear that line once, you heard it night after night, delivered not as a slogan or a bit but as a declaration of purpose from a guy who was still figuring out how to survive doing the thing he loved most.

Jack Ingram didn’t stumble into Adair’s legend by accident. At the time, he was an SMU student playing for beer money, gas money, and another chance to come back the following week on Commerce Street, and when Lois Adair gave him a weekly night, the room and the artist started shaping each other in real time. Jack didn’t simply play Adair’s, he went all in... pouring sweat, volume, and conviction into a Deep Ellum dive with great hamburgers until it became a proving ground for Texas Music.

The energy he brought fit the place perfectly, matching the stickered, sharpied, scarred walls that still tell the story if you know how to listen. Those nights were loud, crowded, and anything but polite, and the songs weren’t protected. They were stress tested in front of crowds that demanded honesty, noise and the ability to dance on the tiny space that served as a dance floor.. It was there that “Attitude and Driving,” “Mary Go Round,” “Beat Up Ford,” and “Elmo Lincoln” found their spine, night after night, until they stuck and started meaning something beyond the room.

Jack even captured that moment in time on Live at Adair’s Saloon, a record that didn’t just document a run of shows but helped put the place on the Texas Music map by showing exactly what could happen when the right artist meets the right room at the right time. While Adair’s had been established in 1963, it didn’t truly hit its stride until Jack showed up in the mid 90s and turned weekly chaos into something lasting.

This was long before “Wherever You Are,” long before “Barefoot and Crazy,” and long before record deals and Sony days, when Jack Ingram was still standing on a small stage in Dallas, playing for survival and closing every show the same way, reminding anyone listening exactly who he was.

Today, under the care of Joel Morales, Adair’s remains an essential stop on the Texas Music trail, a place where anybody who’s anybody has played and where plenty still drop in, not out of nostalgia but because places like this still matter.

And it all traces back to one voice at the end of a set, a simple sentence that became a mission statement.

My name is Jack Ingram and I play country music.

That’s why Adair’s matters. That’s why Jack matters. And that’s why this place will always be This Is Texas Music.

This photo is Jack as he was in the Adair's days from his Livin' Or Dyin' record.
